One man, Richard Knight, put together a private collection of animals and began the zoo in the late 1800s. This is one of the best zoos I have ever been to! Buy your tickets online ahead of time. The Northwest Exhibit is amazing! It's to your left just after the entrance.

The Oregon Zoo, originally the Portland Zoo and later the Washington Park Zoo, is a zoo located in Washington Park, Portland, Oregon, approximately 2 miles southwest of downtown Portland. Founded in 1888, it is the oldest zoo west of the Mississippi River. The 64-acre zoo is owned by the regional Metro government.
