Neighborhoods

The Sintra old town is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk around in the town to visit the cute shops and restaurants. Please read the below – this is my recommended route to follow and things to do on a day out to Sintra Old Town. If you combine this with Quinta da Regaleira you are looking at a full day out. Getting to the Old Town is an easy and nice walk by foot from the house (about 1.5km). TIP: On you maps app, enter your destination as ‘Sintra National Palace’ as a beacon (it is on Largo Rainha Dona Amélia). Sintra municipality is spread out and just entering ‘Sintra’ may not get you to the correct place. You can also enter Jardim de Vigia as an additional stop on the way. On a clear day you can see Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle from there. And, on your way to the old town look out for places where you can enter Park Liberdade – this is a lovely walk through the park to the old town. Viewpoints, restaurants and other thing at the Old Town: - Piriquita for the famous Sintra pastry ‘Travesseiros’. Note: Not Piriquita II, that is not the old historic bakery, Piriquita is the historic one. - Fábrica de Nata for the best Pastel de Nata in Sintra Recommended Restaurants: - Restaurant - Romaria de Baco - Restaurant - Café da Vila (they have a huge Menu 8€ on the wall) - Restaurant - Catinho Gourmet for a lighter lunch. And try the Ginjinha in a little chocolate cup inside the shop  Beautiful Viewpoints: - Outside Sintra National Palace - St Martin Church - Miradoura da Ferraria The best ! : Quinta da Regaleira is less than 1km up the road from the old town. The Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) is also inside the grounds. TIP: During peak season buy tickets online to skip the queue, and make your way to the well first, then from there walk down through the beautiful gardens of the palace. The other part of Sintra, around the station area, is just about 800m from Sintra National Palace. A walk in that direction is recommended, because along the way, down Volta do Duche, you will see beautiful artwork (statues). In this other part of Sintra you will see the beautiful Sintra City hall building, and also find the cute Sintra Station with all it’s azulejos (traditional Portuguese hand painted tiles. Further on, in front of Garagem café, you will find Jardim de Correnteza. Beautiful views and a lovely photo spot. To get back to the house will be uphill. I recommend returning to the house with Uber or taxi. Or bus if you have a viagem card. The buses are quite full during peak season hence I recommend Uber or Taxi.

Sightseeing

Places listed here are historic icons of Sintra. I personally visited everyone I list - they are all beautiful and worth seeing. ** Buy your tickets online to avoid the queues, especially during peak season. I also recommend you make use of public transport during the peak season as parking get problemsome and sometimes there are road closures to manage traffic to heritage sites. ** Tuk tuks works well for these sights, but do ask the price before you get in, they can be expensive. Else use Uber or call the taxi (Taxintra). You can take the bus as well - it might be full during peak season in which case make your way to the station and take the bus from there. **(www) parquesdesintra (dot) pt/en is the best site to explore these historic icons and to buy your tickets online. You don't need a third party provider - this is the direct site for Sintra historic places. NOTE: For entrance to the Pena Palace you will need to book your ticket and select your date and time slot before the time.
