Feel how the earthquake reconstructs Lisbon city. This triumphal arch began to be built after the earthquake of 1755 and it's conclusion was in 1875. The Baixa is the area of town which was rebuilt first after the earthquake of 1755. As the result of a massive reconstruction project, it has an elegance and regularity of architectural style (Baixa Pombalina). The City Centre of Lisbon it's the area around Baixa Pombalina. The Arch in Rua Augusta provide access to a viewing spot from a panoramic 360º view of the city can be enjoyed. Some of the iconic landmarks are visible from the top: Castelo, Alfama, Cathedral (Sé), Chiado and Bairro Alto. It is approximately 7 km from Casa do Restelo. Get there: Tram 15E at either Rua de Pedrouços or Largo da Princesa stop (opt for the former as both stops are about the same distance and you can embark on the tram with less crowds. From the appartment street head left until you find the stop). It takes approximately 25 minutes until Cais do Sodré/ Praça do Comércio/ Praça da Figueira.

It's not exactly the triumphal arc that was planned by Marquês de Pombal in 1759 as part of the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. Work only began on it many years later. The Latin inscription on top reads "VIRTVTIBVSMAIORVMVT SIT OMNIBVSDOCVMENTO", which means "The virtues of our ancestors as a lesson for all'. From the top of arch you can get some great shots of Praça do Comércio and the River Tagus in the background. ›Rua Augusta, Praça do Comércio. Mon-Sun 10am-7pm. Adults €3, free for children under 5.

Lisbon's huge riverfront square, Praça do Comércio, is impressive enough seen from the ground, but it's only when viewed from the Arco da Rua Augusta that its vast dimensions can really be appreciated.

This triumphal arch was built in the wake of the 1755 earthquake. A lift whisks you to the top, where fine views of Praça do Comércio, the Rio Tejo and Castelo de São Jorge await. Admission for kids under five is free.
