Visit the Museu do Oriente If you enjoy Asian art, head to the Museu do Oriente, a museum that opened in 2008 to highlight Asian culture and Portugal’s ties during the Age of Discoveries. Inside, the artifacts include paintings, statues, ceramics, textiles, and more. As a special treat, there is also a restaurant serving Asian food inside the museum.
Portugal was the first European power to establish colonies in Asia and was the last one to leave (Macau finally became part of China in 1999). So it's only natural that Lisbon has a museum dedicated to the art and culture of the East, presenting paintings, textiles, masks, and Indo-Portuguese pieces.
As the European city to make the first cultural and trade contacts with much of Asia, Lisbon had to have a space dedicated to the art and culture of the Orient, explaining the role it played in it.
