The art museum is central to Portland’s cultural district, housing a large and wide-ranging collection of artworks. The largest art museum in Oregon and one of the oldest in the country, the Portland Art Museum was organized in 1892, and its first exhibition was a set of magnificent plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculpture, displayed in the upper hall of the city’s library.

Portland Center Stage produces at least 10 major productions annually in two theaters located inside the Gerding Theater at the Armory: The 590-seat Main Stage and the 190-seat Ellyn Bye Studio. Established in 1988 as an offshoot of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Portland Center Stage became an independent theater in 1994 and now attracts more than 150,000 theatergoers annually. Portland Center Stage produces a blend of musicals, classical, contemporary and premiere works, in addition to the annual summer festival called JAW: A Playwrights Festival.
