Neighborhoods

The Mission neighborhood is an undeniably perfect representation of the diversity within San Francisco, from cultures and ethnicities, activities, celebrations, and architecture. Sheltered from the fog, Mission is one of the sunniest neighborhoods in San Francisco, which makes it an ideal home for Mission Dolores Park. The popularity of this park soars across every community in the city, and with its sprawling 16 acres, it has something for everyone. The newly renovated playground attracts families with tots to teens, while the full tennis and basketball courts are open for play for all levels of athletes. Annual and seasonal events held here attract crowds from all over the Bay Area, whether it is a national holiday or a summer movie in the park. Public transit is present in multiple forms throughout the neighborhood, making it easy to access from every corner of the city. And the destination restaurants and cafes that have exploded in this neighborhood continue to grow and attract the large population of foodies from around the Bay, and from around the globe. With shopping, dining, shared outdoor green space, and residential properties of every kind, Mission Dolores is a quintessential big city neighborhood full of character, vitality and diversity. Becoming a resident here means you may never want to leave the neighborhood again. Mission offers the most varied options in residential living with single-family homes, lofts, apartments, condos, multi-unit buildings, rooms, and even driveways and garages available for rent. Victorian and Edwardian style homes blanket a majority of the neighborhood giving it an old-fashioned authenticity, while stylish contemporary homes and condominiums give it a modern vibe.

Noe Valley borders the Mission and is an easy stroll from the rental - it feels like a small town despite its centrality in San Francisco, making it a coveted and pricey neighborhood. As the name suggests it is bordered by hills, giving it an intimate feel. 24th Street is its main drag, full of artisanal goods stores, yoga places, and a Whole Foods that is both the biggest grocer in the neighborhood and a cause of constant traffic on the street. Like most central neighborhoods, parking is tough, but public transportation is pretty readily available, especially towards the north and east sides of the 'hood. It has a very cohesive community feeling, as evidenced by the brand new town square that sits off of 24th Street; this is the result of an organized effort by residents to turn a parking lot into a space to gather and relax in the sun. The town square now houses the wonderful Saturday Farmer’s Market, which features live music, food carts, local produce, and children's activities. Noe Valley is sunny and clean-cut, with lots of pedestrians, many with strollers and dogs. While this “downtown” strip offers most of what you need, residents farther out may find it less convenient, and some have grumbled that obscure artisanal products are more readily available here than practical items. Noe Valley is full of Victorians and small homes that add to its charm. It’s very attractive to older people and new families who love the strong community feeling and safety without compromising accessibility. It also lacks nightlife other than a few bars scattered around, but they are rarely crowded or rowdy. It can feel like a ghost town later at night and is less of a draw for younger people and students, but is a great compromise for those who want the option to head out, yet still prefer coming home to an area with less noise and activity. Those on the Mission and Castro borders are in walkable distance to plenty of city life. Noe Valley is bordered on the north by The Castro and Dolores Heights, on the east by The Mission, on the south by Glen Park, and on the west by Diamond Heights and Twin Peaks.

Food scene

Made In The Mission! Try the Mint Mojito coffee and the Tesora blend and order ahead on the app. Coffee, teas and breakfast goodies! It all began in 1978 when Phil purchased a convenience store in the heart of the Mission District. He treated his customers with niceness and respect, always paying attention to their needs. He understood that if you put people first, you cannot fail. In his off-hours, Phil blended and tested brews, trying to make the perfect cup of coffee. After 25 years of experimenting, Phil moved his kitchen table into the convenience store and Philz Coffee was born. From its first day, Philz was about quality and care, warmth and connection. This is what makes Philz feel like home. It’s not just about coffee—it’s about people.

“The Alamo Drafthouse Theater is good food, good beer and good film, all at the same place!” That’s how we described ourselves in 1997, and that mission hasn’t changed and will never, ever change. For over two decades we’ve worked to make the Alamo Drafthouse experience the best cinematic experience in the world. Here’s how. The greatest films ever made We don’t just want to be another multiplex. Everyone who works at Alamo Drafthouse, from the managers to the servers to the kitchen staff, is passionate about film. To us, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be just as worthy of attention and celebration as a foreign language drama. Through our Drafthouse Recommends program we've committed ourselves to helping innovative and challenging films like GET OUT, THE FLORIDA PROJECT, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, and THE HANDMAIDEN find an audience. Celebrating classic cinema is also something we take seriously. Whether it’s an interactive Movie Party presentation of a timeless classic, a chef-inspired feast with a menu paired to a film, or a re-evaluation of a lost gem, we love sharing the movies we love with Alamo Drafthouse audiences of all ages.

Parks

This GEM is located in the Mission (directly across the street from the flat) at 26th and Harrison, Garfield Square Park has long been a recreation & gathering space for San Franciscans. Built in 1884, it was actually home to the first professional baseball park in California! Now, the park features a slew of amenities for a first class, culturally-enriching play experience, with Chicano art & murals adorning the clubhouse and top-of-the-line facilities. In 2006, in a public-private partnership with the City Fields Foundation, SF Rec & Park was able to install a beautiful new soccer field. This signaled a new attitude & commitment to expanding access to recreation at Garfield Park, and would usher in the 2012 voter-approved Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond to set aside cash to invest in community parks. With an approved plan in 2015, the renovation project would set out to create a new clubhouse/community hub, improvements to a beloved swimming pool, new basketball court and even a splashpad for children to use during the May - October months! Construction went underway for the $19.7 million renovations in 2018 and aimed for a launch date in 2020. Despite setbacks due to the pandemic, the new and improved Garfield Center and Pool opened to the public in March 2021! Check out the restored murals, state-of-the-art pool (via online reservation), nice half-court basketball hoop and historic field!
