This area is very historic for Monterey. The Canneries were the main industry in the area. They are now converted to fun shops and restaurants of all types. You can go tour Ed Rickett’s laboratory next to the Aquarium. If you’ve read Steinbeck’s novels, you’ll love coming here! Ed Rickett was Steinbeck’s close friend and a famous oceanographer.
You can go see The Great Tide Pool where Ed Rickett collected many of his specimens. It is between John Denver Point and Asilomar Beach. There is a small sign labeling it.

You can go tour Ed Rickett’s laboratory next to the Aquarium. If you’ve read Steinbeck’s novels, you’ll love coming here! Ed Rickett was Steinbeck’s close friend and a famous oceanographer.

There are many areas next to this beach with rocks of all sizes to scramble over while looking for tile pool critters.
Many visitors and residents come to this area to watch the spectacular sunsets. Come a little early for parking if you want to watch the sunset.

Closes early on Saturdays, check hours online. Our family LOVES this place! If we are going by Santa Cruz, we always ask if we can stop at The Buttery!
