Neighborhoods

You can see the hill from your kitchen window. But before you take the strenuous hike up the hill, there are a few places within a block from your front door. Have coffee and/or a quick snack at “Café Seventy 8” (named after the gas station/auto repair shop that once was located on this corner). Have dinner at the”Front Porch” on 29th Street or “Blue Plate” or “Mi Linda Perú” nearby on Mission Street. Stop at “Mitchell’s Ice Cream” for dessert, a San Francisco icon for decades! (Get a number before waiting in the fast moving line or skip the line, buy a gallon and pay for it quickly at the express checkout line). There many local bars nearby. Enjoy your drink while sitting in one the outside rocking chairs at the “Rock Bar”. The view of the City from Bernal Hill is incredible. You can walk to Mission and Cortland Ave or take the 24 Divisadero SF Muni bus up the hill to the short business district on Cortland Avenue. Avedano’s is the BEST butcher shop, this side of San Francisco. Stop next door for something to “wet your whistle”! “Healthy Spirits” has an outstanding collection of bottled spirits!! Visit “The Epicurean Trader” a gourmet delight. This is a family and “LGBT family” friendly neighborhood. There are a variety of international restaurants here or head further down Cortland Ave to “Barebottle Brewing Company”. Or take the 67 Bernal bus at Nevada Street and continue to the bus stop near the top of the hill and walk up. The same 67 Bernal bus continues down to 24th and Mission. You can walk back to the apartment on flat ground from there.

Walk West up to Church Street and take the J Church Streetcar to the Castro District. You can get off at Dolores Park, 18th Street or Market Street. Or front door, walk a mile down the Valencia Corridor and take a left on 18th and head West. The Castro makes me think of the “San Francisco Mime Troupe” and free Summer theatre in “Dolores Park”. I crave a banana split from “Bi-Rite Ice Creamery”. I love getting lost in “Cliff’s Variety Store” or joining parents and children all in costumes at a sing-a-long in the “Castro Theatre”. The Castro makes me think of the charity works from the “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” (http://www.thesisters.org/) Here’s a link on more: https://www.gaytravel.com/gay-guides/san-francisco#.YYbuVmytTTE.mailto

I generally get what I need and leave. I park at the Tam’s parking on Washington across from Portsmouth Square. It’s valet short term parking. But if you want to get lost in Chinatown, park at the Public parking underneath Portsmouth Square. Chinatown is a great place to get all your inexpensive souvenir tee shirts etc. as well as inexpensive fleece San Francisco jackets, in case you get a sudden chill when the fog rolls in. In the evening, check out an adult theme variety show in the 100 year old haunted Great Star Theatre on Jackson. https://www.krmisfitcabaret.com/?fbclid=IwAR0RZ6U8vaRd36B5CYdyLyhAXoM0AsBWJrmkpYiykbVz0M_5aSIVVG798NE_aem_AcH4G148icCwGfgdRcpwcNZH2C4a0vtcA3ehDM5VUIxcBJIs-2ZjaRLswIockXNWMMkOjqSy6HboHi0uJkqRr0OvbIXLNM4vLdzv0P5QSr6sgGDFbQhvrUHGhspCpOx16q0

Visit the colorful soul of San Francisco. It is buzzing with artists and poets, young and old collaborating with cultural advocates in a neighborhood that has always been a melting pot of immigrants, from the Irish and Italians a hundred years ago to representation from every corner of Latin America, Asia and all areas of the world today! Don’t miss Carnaval SF in May.

What to wear-you can easily hit all seasons on the same day

Bring comfortable walking shoes & layers of clothing. It is cool early mornings. It will be warm when the sun breaks through the fog and chilly again when the sun sets (or the closer you are to Ocean Beach). Rainy season tends to be from late Oct. to Early Spring. Global Warming may bring a warm false early Spring in mid Feb. Some showers in March or April. A drop in temperature is felt in November with very brief cold weather between Christmas & New Year’s. The hottest brief time of the year is usually between mid August to early October. We call this time of year, our “Indian Summer”.
Adat dan budaya

Street Smarts

Be aware of your surroundings at all times! Don’t walk through drunken crowds wearing gang colors or L.A. Dodgers’ blue. Avoid dark secluded alleys. Unless you are administering aid, food or clothing to the homeless, etc., be extra aware if you venture into the Tendeloin or South of Market. Avoid looking at your mobile device when crossing the street. If you drive, look out for pedestrians (slow moving Seniors, runaway toddlers, joggers with headsets, speeding cyclists and those young people on rented scooters that NEVER pay attention to road rules!)

San Francisco is open for Business

As more businesses are opening up, many are asking for proof of vaccination in order to dine/drink libations inside. Airlines are asking for proof of negative testing 72 hours before departure. (Inquire with your airline and don’t get stuck! There are places for free testing all around the City.)

Be prepared for Season Changes all in one day.

The famous 19th Century writer Mark Twain is quoted to say, “The coldest Winter I have ever spent was a Summer in San Francisco.” (Climate Change has changed all this! Dryer & warmer weather.) Wear layers. Morning & late afternoon fog will bring a chill. Sun breaking through fog will bring warmer weather. Extreme hot weather is a very brief week between August & mid October. Natives call this our “Indian Summer”. Rainy Season hits between late October to Early Spring along with a drop in temperature felt in November. Very cold weather is a brief week between Christmas & New Year’s.
