This allows us to grow cooler climate vinifera grapes, such as Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc and Riesling to make into white wine. As well as our extensive reds including Leon Millot, Baco Noir, and many of our winemaker’s unique blends.

Sand Bar State Park takes its name from a natural sandbar between South Hero Island in Grand Isle County and the town of Milton on the Vermont mainland. The park is on the mainland, or eastern end, of that sandbar. The sandbar itself is the result of the Lamoille River, over tens of thousands of years, washing sediment downstream from the present Lamoille Valley. The river borne material sank to the bottom as the river emptied into the lake, eventually filling the lake to create the marshland south and east of the park, and the sandbar to the west. Natural lake depths here, without the sandbar, would be over 150 feet. As it is, water depth now along the top of the sandbar to South Hero is only a couple of feet. Because of the shallow water, the route along the sandbar served as a ford from the mainland to the islands well before construction of the first bridge in 1850. Crossing that first toll bridge, built of rock, gravel, and logs laid corduroy-fashion through the marsh and along the bar, must have been an adventure. Narrow and much lower than the present causeway, it was often flooded and always needed major repairs after damage caused by shifting ice each spring. Even crossing today's wider, higher causeway, completed in 1959, can be an adventure when snow blowing across the frozen lake blocks visibility, or spray and water from crashing waves washes across the highway during storms when the lake is high.
Marshland south and east of the park is part of the 1,000 acre Sand Bar Wildlife Refuge, established in 1920 and managed by the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife. Home to beaver, muskrats, racoons, and turtles, it's a seasonal stopover for a great variety of migratory waterfowl and other birds, a waterfowl nesting area, and spawning grounds for many of the lake's fish. Hunting, fishing, and trapping are not allowed on refuge land.
Sand Bar State Park began in 1933 and was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, a nationwide public works program created during the great economic depression of the 1930s to provide jobs and training for thousands of unemployed. Many of the parks in this country, both state and national, trace their origins to the CCC era. Sand Bar's stone bathhouse was a CCC project completed in 1935. The original 10-acre park included a small campground on the south side of the highway. As U.S. 2 became a busier and faster road, camping that close to it, and crossing back and forth, was neither desirable nor particularly safe. In 1970, a land swap gave the former campground, now a fishing access area, to the Fish and Wildlife Department and brought the park to its present 15-acre size. The useable length of the beach was doubled and the picnic area, newer bathhouse, and long parking lot were built as the park expanded east onto land acquired from the refuge. Today at Sand Bar, the smooth, sandy lake bottom remains shallow well out from shore, making this an ideal swimming spot for children. That, and the uninterrupted length of sandy beach, very high quality water in this section of the lake, and well-kept facilities in an attractive setting combine to make Sand Bar the most visited day park in the state.

The Island Line Trail ranks as one of the most scenic vistas in the world and is some of the easiest riding and walking terrains in all of Vermont. Superb biking, walking, gorgeous views, trails, farms, and good food await you along the Island Line Trail. The Trail starts south of downtown Burlington in Oakledge Park and parallels the lakeshore past nature reserves and across the Colchester Causeway via the Bike Ferry. Our specially equipped bike ferry, the Bill and Carole Hauke 2, will carry you comfortably across the 200 foot "cut" whether you are heading south from the Islands or north from the Burlington/ Colchester area.

The owner lived year-round on the island and began a timber management program to supplement the camping operation. Under state ownership, remote area camping has been continued on seven sites dotted around the island. Land management activities are those which will keep the island unique and unspoiled.

Prevailing southerly winds, in the late summer and fall when lake levels are the lowest, blow the sand back from shore, forming dunes. It's a barrier between the lakeshore and the wetland behind, and an island because the beach and dunes, however slowly, continue to migrate into and over the wetland. Deposits of exposed peat are visible on the low end of the beach or in the shallow water just offshore. This peat was formed in the wetland; as the beach and dunes have moved back the peat has been overlaid by sand. Erosion from the waves continues to uncover it.

In 2016, Alisha Utter and Kyle Bowley put down roots in Grand Isle and started Arbor Farmstead. Their business plan included a farm market when the right space became available.
Since then, they have vended produce/herbs/flowers, fruit snow cones, and wooden-wares at the Champlain Islands Farmers’ Market and Burlington Farmers’ Market each year. In light of the pandemic in 2020, Alisha and Kyle launched a produce delivery service, along with Vermont’s first veganic CSA program. They also opened an on-site farm stand in Grand Isle.

A Vermont Artisans’ Gallery is an artisan gallery in Grand Isle, Vermont. Located on Route 2 just north of the village in Grand Isle. The property is a quirky old farmhouse built in 1797, with lots of character and interesting spaces for displaying art and fine crafts. The five acre lot has great frontage on the highway, and lots of room for us to grow.
Our goal is to provide a gallery space filled with high quality, hand-crafted work from Vermont artists and artisans. All work will be juried according to aesthetics, technical proficiency, originality, and marketability. The gallery is a retail sales venue, instructional site, as well as a common advertising tool for each artist.

The Hyde Log Cabin is a historic log cabin on U.S. Route 2 in Grand Isle, Vermont, United States. It was built in 1783, and occupied by the Hyde family for 150 years. Believed to be one of the oldest log cabins in the US, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The Hyde Log Cabin is a historic log cabin on U.S. Route 2 in Grand Isle, Vermont, United States. It was built in 1783, and occupied by the Hyde family for 150 years. Believed to be one of the oldest log cabins in the US, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
