Salona was one the biggest towns in the Roman Dalmatian province. It was rich, luxurious and at one point it gave birth to one of the greatest Roman emperors - the emperor Diocletian. With time, he would try to reaorganize the empire in order to try save it from its inevitable collapse (and for a while his reforms worked) and then retire in the vicinity of his home town, into a unique palace he would build on the coast of the Adriatic sea and on top of sulphur springs that would help manage his aging ill health. From this palace, the city of Split would slowly, through centuries, grow into what it is today. The old city of Salona offers amazing sights of ancient roman ruins and their way of life, and is the only place in the world that boasts four old Christian cemeteries.

Did you know that there is a lake in the very heart of Dalmatia that is home to dragons and aliens? The small town of Rogoznica is a slice of heaven for everyone looking for some peace and quiet, where they can take in all the sounds, scents and flavours of the Mediterranean. It also offers a unique opportunity to swim in the saltwater lake right next to the sea, on the Gradina Peninsula. The Rogoznica Lake is known colloquially as “Dragon’s Eye” (Zmajevo oko) because of its elliptical shape, and according to legend, it was created after a meteor crashed there. Although it has no direct surface connection with the surrounding sea, the two are interconnected through cracks and channels in the porous limestone, and a cave called “Dragon’s Ear” (Zmajevo uho). This lake is special in that it contains several layers of water, whose colours have been mixed by a talented painter of nature. Near the surface, the water is green and blue, and in he centre it’s yellow and green. There is no oxygen in its bottom layers, and the high concentration of sulphur makes the water appear pink, red and purple.
