The lines are long (usually 10-20 min), but you'll feast with your eyes the whole time. Best bakery in San Francisco, hands down. Beat the crowds by arriving early, especially on a weekday.

Deep dish! Delicious and filling. Get the Little Star (spinach blended with ricotta and feta, mushrooms, onions, garlic) and add sausage if you're feeling indulgent.

Not the most famous of the taquerias, but the one I frequent most often. Personally, my choice is carnitas burrito, regular, black beans, spicy pico de gallo, add avocado. Eat with loads of green salsa and you'll feel full the whole day.

This Burmese hole in the wall doesn't look like much, but the flavors are popping and the price is right. There are only 5 seats, so be prepared for the matron to usher you out after you've finished eating.

If you don't think chicken can be special, think again. The rotisserie here will leave you wondering why you visited San Francisco instead of Peru. Pair with a Pisco sour after a long day of sightseeing.

Classic Vietnamese eatery. I recommend the lemongrass bun (which is not at actual bun, but a vermicelli bowl with grilled pork, herbs, and peanuts). If it's full, head up the street to neighboring Mao for a more upscale experience with similar menu offerings.

Monday night dim sum pizza! Take a seat and wait for the waiters to come around with various flavors so you can try a slice of everything. The views of the city from Potrero Hill don't hurt, either.

This Chinese bakery is a local gem. Fill up on pastries for $1-2 each before continuing along Mission street. The coconut bun is especially good.

This Mediterranean neighborhood gem is a brilliant choice for a nice meal out. The mezze (small bites, ~$6-7 each) and pizzas are especially delightful, and the setting is cute and modern. Tell the chef that Jesse sent you and he'll come out and say hi. :)

Wednesday wing night! 25 cents each, 2 drink minimum per person, no to-go containers. This local dive is always packed. It's not the fanciest of options, but it's a great choice for bar food and a taste of the mission. If you don't go on a Wednesday, try the totchos (yep, they're tater tot nachos).

Such amazing ice cream at this Portland-based gem. Try all the flavors before deciding on one. They're patient and you won't regret it.

Where else can you find a pirate supply store?! This is one among many cute, quirky shops on Valencia street. It's great for a stroll on a sunny San Francisco afternoon.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is actually a delightful restaurant, but snag a seat at the bar if you're looking for a classy, upscale cocktail. The old fashioned flight is especially memorable.

Can a grocery store really be a tourist destination? This one can. You'll see where San Francisco gets its reputation for organic food and crunchy granola living. Some of the more expensive groceries in the city, but a great place for a specialty item or some top-quality produce.
