Akerhuset (Swedish for "the farm house") retains its historic floor plan, but with modern and eco-friendly amenities. Designed by Victoria and Brian Freeman, revel in an enormous chef's kitchen with island; then walk through original sliding doors in the living room. Each bedroom features a queen-size bed with Casper mattress, armoire and work area. The lower level also provides an onsite stacked washer/dryer and a tornado shelter that doubles as a second living room.

Located just a few blocks from downtown Lindsborg, Akerhuset (Swedish for "the Farm House") transports guests back to the family farm. In fact, the entire farm house was carefully moved from its original location north of town to where it rests today! Many locals, even a few TV reporters from Wichita, came out for this event!

Enter the farm house on Grant Street through the frosted-window front door at the rocker-filled front porch. After hanging up your coat and kicking off your shoes, you'll be in awe of the expansive chef's kitchen with a large island with bar stool seating for four. Designed by Brian Freeman, an historic beam was transformed into a huge lighting fixture over the chef's kitchen island. With plenty of cabinets and counter space, it's an easy task to whip up your favorite meals or a late-night snack. A bar-height table and chairs for four are nestled into the bay window next to the chef's kitchen. A half bath is near the back door.

Step through the original historic sliding doors into the farm house living room with a comfy sofa and chairs. This well-designed space is perfect for conversation and laughter while watching your favorite shows on Hulu+Live TV (no ads) on the Smart TV. The original historic double-hung windows provide plenty of sunshine on Kansas' best days.

A staircase to the lower level leads to two bedroom suites, each with a queen-size Casper mattress, armoire, desk, office chair and Smart TV. Each ensuite bathroom features a shower. The onsite laundry offers a stacked washer and dryer, with a drying rack and plenty of space for folding clothes and towels. The tornado shelter also serves as a secondary living area with comfy seats and yet another Smart TV.

Sustainability is literally built into Akerhuset. The interior of the farm house is heated and cooled with high-efficiency electric heat pumps, often called minisplits, that are individually controlled with remote controllers. Appliances are Energy Star certified and plumbing fixtures offer low-flow efficiency. The recycling bin is in the kitchen. And yes, the City of Lindsborg recycles.

Lindsborg, Kansas is an artist community that embraces its unique spin on all things Swedish. Guests visit Lindsborg for its festivals, shopping along Main Street and art museums, including the Sandzen Gallery (America's Van Gogh). Coronado Heights (a "castle" built by the Works Progress Administration during the Depression) is a popular destination for picnics and to soak in the views of the countryside. Larger cities of Salina and McPherson are a short drive away. Another destination is the Cosmosphere, the largest collection of Russian and American space memorabilia outside of the Smithsonian - including the Apollo 13 capsule Odyssey.

While central Kansas may not be considered a "must see," it can be a destination for discerning travelers. Lindsborg Vacation Rentals offers studio apartments and houses for short-term stays. Several years ago, I reinvented myself as a historic preservationist. Six of my buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I'm an engineer by training, so I enjoy creating great commercial and residential spaces within the restraints of century-old buildings.

As apartment space became available, I elected to create furnished apartments for guests staying in the area or just traveling through. Many guests are surprised and delighted to find these properties in Lindsborg, Kansas, a small town of 3500.
