The Centre of Lisbon life...

Situated at the edge of the River Tejo is Lisbon’s grandest square, the Praça do Comércio, a symbol of Portugal’s once unrivalled power and influence.

Before 1755, the fine royal Ribeira Palace was located in this area, but was subsequently obliterated by a tsunami that accompanied a great earthquake. Not only was the Palace destroyed, but with it a royal library of about 20,000 books, including a huge collection of classical Portuguese literature. The whole of the Baixa neighbourhood was destroyed as well.

After the earthquake, The Praça do Comércio was built. The renowned Joaquim Machado de Castro sculpted the statue of King José I riding his horse, which lies right in the centre. Indeed, it was this regent's reign that oversaw the reconstruction of Lisbon, with the politician, the Marquês de Pombal, whose image appears on the bronze emblem on the front of the pedestal, instrumental in the process. At the river edge, expeditions set out to the various colonies of the Portuguese empire. After returning and docking, newly acquired foreign wares were sold the through this Commercial Square, which was housed in by yellow painted buildings, namely the administration offices of the empire.

Between the Praça do Comércio and Rua Augusta lies the Arco da Rua Augusta, which was unveiled 100 years after the natural catastrophe. The Tejo and the Douro, Portugals’ 2 rivers, are represented by 2 seated figures of the Arch, while the Portuguese coat of arms, representing Glory, Valour and Genius are represented by the 3 statues at the top. On a more sombre note, the king Carlos I, together with his heir, Luis Filipe, were both assassinated by this location in 1908.

Towards the river, tourists (and sometimes, street musicians) gather around The Cais das Colunas, with marble stairs which descend to the river. (These used to lead directly to the Royal Palace, before the afore-mentioned earthquake). Take the opportunity to enjoy the sunset by the riverside! The original design of the 2 towers which once belonged to the destroyed Ribeira Palace, served as an inspiration to the construction of the towers at this location.

In conclusion, The Praça do Comércio is an unmissable tourist attraction. In present times, this square also acts as a transport hub, with a ferry terminal, buses, a metro station and trams. It is also located between 2 of Lisbon’s main train stations, Santa Apolonia and Cais do Sodré.
