This is the only cooking class in Portugal where you get to learn about pastry making inside a real award-winning Portuguese bakery - just 30 mins from Lisbon!

The class starts with an introduction to the history of Pastel de Nata as well as the family-run bakery where this workshop takes place. While we talk, you will also get to try other traditional pastries João's bakery is famous for.

After you've geared up, you'll go inside the kitchen of João's very own "pastelaria". This is where you will learn how to bake the irresistible Portuguese Custard Tarts (aka Pastel de Nata / Egg Tarts) everybody loves!

Unlike other Pastel de Nata classes around Lisbon, we will show you how to make puff pastry like the pros. Afterwards, we will make the custard from scratch and bake it all inside a professional oven. During this class we all work together as a team. Everyone will get to make at least 3 tarts by hand - spread the dough with a specific Pastel de Nata technique, fill in the custard, etc. The end result will be a collaborative effort. A delicious one, of course! ;)

In the end, we'll eat the warm tarts with coffee, tea, Port wine or sour cherry liqueur!

I'm Zara, a Portuguese food writer. I got fed up seeing tourists who come to Portugal pay big bucks for cooking classes that aren't always representative of our food culture. That's why I've teamed up with my friend João, who is a 5th generation baker, to share this experience with you!

João grew up in the hospitality business. At 13 years of age, João decided to embrace the family tradition of baking treats. He helps running his family business consisting of 3 bakeries, which have won 3rd Best Pastel de Nata in Lisbon! He will be the one welcoming you into his bakery and teaching you how to make Pastel de Nata at home!

NOTE: this experience used to run in the centre of Lisbon but, because of Covid19 related changes, we are now happily hosting in the town of Malveira, in Mafra, a well-known area famous for its food related traditions

Wir hatten beide viel Spaß an dem Backkurs und ich habe mich bereits im Vorfeld sehr darauf gefreut. Joãn hat uns alles sehr einfach und verständlich auf englisch erklärt und alle Teilnehmer immer mit eingebunden. Wir trugen alle Schürzen, Haarnetze und medizinischen Masken. Vielen Dank dass erleben zu dürfen.

This was a truly wonderful workshop. João really took the time to make sure we all understood each step and how to make sure the pastéis de nata were ready for the next step. I feel confident I can do this at home now and can’t wait to share my pastéis de nata with my friends!

This was the best pastel de nata class we could have asked for! João started the class by getting to know us which led to some great questions and conversation about both us and him, his background, and the business. Right from the beginning, we felt it was so much more than a class, but really his love of what he does and wanting to share it with others. Throughout the class, he took his time to explain the process in details, answer questions thoroughly, and share stories along the way. He was so personable, warm, funny, and engaging, we felt like old friends enjoying a good time together. We not only feel like we’ll actually be able to make pastéis de nata when we get home, but that each time we do, we’ll have such a warm good feeling remembering our time here in Portugal. Thanks, João, for such a great experience!

This was one of the highlights of my Portugal trip. João instantly makes you feel at home. He is charismatic, a fun storyteller and of course a pastry GENIUS - I have never tasted pastel de natas as delicious as what we baked!!

It was a very warm experience and Joao was an excellent teacher. We learnt a lot about the history of pastel de nata from the perspective of Joao and his family's history (including how he has tinkered with his recipe as well). The actual pastel de nata's turned out amazing and were amongst my top 2 most tastiest experiences in London. Joao takes considerable care in explaining ingredients used (including where you would find them in your home country) and answered so many of our questions. If you're a home cook or just enjoying cooking, I highly recommend that you pop by Malviera for this :)

we really enjoyed the time with João today and it was great at the bakery. He is such a nice person and really took all the time for all the questions. The food we created were great and it is such a nice experience. The time was running too fast... Highly recommended if you wanna learning how to bake!
